Bell to Bell Boxing Club
Design study for a boxing gym whose homepage is a working round timer.
A design study. Bell to Bell Boxing Club is a made-up business, so the copy, prices and details are invented to show how the design works.
Overview
Project overview
A made-up boxing club in Wilmington for adults and teens. The page has one job, getting a beginner to book a free first class, so it opens on the gym's own round clock and then shows exactly what that first hour looks like.
Approach
How I approached it
This is a design study for a boxing gym I made up. The page has one job: get someone who has never boxed to book a free first class. Every boxing gym has a round clock on the wall, so I put a working one at the top of the page. You can press Start and shadowbox a round in your kitchen: three minutes in red, a beep, a minute of rest in blue, then the next round.
Below the clock, the page answers what a beginner actually wants to know, which is what will happen to them in there. The first class is drawn as an hour, with each step under its share of the time, and the bag rounds use the timer’s red and blue so the two parts of the page connect. It also says plainly that nobody spars in the first class.
The timetable and prices are coded by corner. Red corner classes are the ones a beginner can walk into, and each free-class time in the grid fills in the booking form. Blue corner classes are for members and carry their triangle in the opposite corner, so the code works without color too. The rope stripes show up once, above the form.
What was delivered
Deliverables
- A round timer at the top of the page that works: three-minute rounds, a minute of rest, Start, Pause and Reset, the round number, and a short beep at each bell
- The first class laid out as an hour, from hand wraps at 6:00 to the cool down at 6:50, each step under its own share of a bar sized by minutes
- A weekly timetable, Monday to Saturday, coded red corner for beginner classes and blue corner for members, where every free-class time fills in the booking form
- The three coaches in plain text, with what each one teaches and one detail about them
- Prices from the free first class to private coaching, and a booking form that only offers the classes a beginner can take
Key decisions
- The timer panel is corner red for work and corner blue for rest, and the next color sweeps across it when the bell goes
- Kanit italic at weight 900 for the clock and the headings, against plain Work Sans for everything you need to read
- Red, white and blue rope stripes appear once, as the ropes you step through to get to the booking form
